At the rally, UCSF Assistant Specialist and ARU Bargaining Team member Maike Roth spoke about the need for UC to quickly address the challenges that AR’s face, pointing out that “UC already created a 6 month delay in winning recognition for our union. Justice delayed is justice denied.” And UCSF Professional Researcher Luke Bonser discussed the need to retain high quality researchers at UC, and that this can be accomplished in part by providing a clear promotion process, job security, and family friendly benefits for all ARs.
A representative from State Senator Scott Wiener’s office also joined the rally. Senator Wiener had previously signed on to a letter sent in April asking for swift recognition of our union and we are grateful to have his continued support. The rally also comes on the heels of SF ARs meeting on Tuesday with UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Dan Lowenstein to discuss the necessity of providing sustainable career paths for all ARs.
ARs ability to win a strong contract is wholly dependent on our willingness to continue to engage in mass collective action, as we did today at UCSF, last week at UCSD, and last month at UC Berkeley. We will build on this momentum as negotiations continue on Monday and Tuesday at UC Irvine. If you’ve not yet gotten involved in the ARU / UAW 5810 bargaining effort, we urge you to reach out today!
