We met again yesterday with UC via videoconference to bargain over changes in our working conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UC had several responses to our demands we presented last week:

  • Paid Leave – UC employees are included in a recently passed federal law (Families First Coronavirus Response Act) that expands paid leave to take care of children when schools/daycares are closed during the outbreak. UC is preparing specific information about this and will share it soon.
  • Visa/Appointment processing – For appointment and visa processing by UC, campuses should be processing these on time without delays. If you are facing any delays due to UC, contact the union.
  • Merit reviews (ARs) – Reduced productivity due the pandemic will be taken into account during future merit reviews and will not be counted against you, and you can request extensions to merit review guidelines. Merit increases will be implemented on time (with back pay if necessary). Also, Assistant Project Scientists and Assistant Professional Researchers can request 1-year extensions to the 8-year advancement clock.
  • Lab work guidelines – For Postdocs and ARs who need to work in labs, UC is creating guidelines for physical distancing in labs including organizing shift work.

We are going to meet again on Friday, April 3 at 10am. If you haven’t filled out the COVID-19 Impacts survey, click here to do so. Let us know if you have any comments or questions at uaw5810@uaw5810.org

During this health crisis, it’s more important than ever that we have a union, and it’s more important than ever to support our union as a member! If you are not yet a member, please click here to join (Postdoc and ARs can both sign up at this link).

Also, today is US Census Day. The Census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories as of April 1, and has implications on funding for public services, schools, and hospitals. Census data also determines how many seats California is allocated in the House of Representatives. Everybody counts: U.S. citizens, permanent residents, temporary migrants (such as many international Postdocs and ARs), refugees, and undocumented folks. You can fill out the census online here: https://my2020census.gov/
