We have updates on a special open enrollment period for medical benefits due to COVID-19. There are also new options for retirement account withdrawals and loans for Postdocs and ARs impacted by the pandemic. In addition, our union is supporting the international call for a day of actions on Wednesday, June 10 against police brutality and anti-Blackness. Finally, we are continuing to collect responses to our union’s research ramp-up survey – if you haven’t already participated, click here to fill it out.

Special benefits open enrollment due to COVID-19
In response to requests from our union, there will be a special open enrollment period from June 1 – October 28 where Postdocs and ARs can make changes in benefits plans. Click here for more information from UC. During this period, you have the option to:

  • Enroll in a medical plan if you are not already enrolled
  • Change your medical plan (such as from HMO to PPO) or your coverage level (such as self to family coverage)

The period for enrolling in any plan due to a qualifying event (marriage, domestic partnership, birth, adoption, loss of coverage, etc) has also been extended. If you have any questions about enrolling in benefits or changing plans, contact your union at uaw5810@uaw5810.org.

Loans and early withdrawals allowed from UC retirement savings plans
UC Regents have recently voted to allow loans and withdrawals from UC retirement plans including Defined Contribution plans (including DCP-Safe Harbor and Savings Choice), 403(b), and 457(b) plans for employees with adverse financial impacts from COVID-19. The criteria include having a positive COVID-19 test (either you or a dependent), financial hardship, or being unable to work due to loss of childcare. More details are outlined here and please contact us with any questions.

June 10 Actions: Particles for Justice and ShutDownSTEM
UAW 5810 stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and calls for an end to police violence and for the dismantling of systems of oppression that foster violence against Black and Brown people. The academic organization Particles for Justice and the coalition of STEM professionals and academics ShutDownSTEM, have called for a day of actions and reflections on June 10, 2020, to further the cause of ending global anti-Blackness. The goals of Particles for Justice and ShutDownSTEM are fully consistent with the values of our union and our Joint Council has endorsed them, and we stand with those goals. We urge you to find a way to participate.
