Wildfires caused by lightning strikes, drought and high temperatures are happening across California including near UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and in the South Bay near San Jose. A number of areas are under evacuation orders or evacuation warnings and air quality is poor in many areas. For up-to-date information, here is the Cal Fire statewide incidents page and current information for the following counties: Santa Cruz and San Mateo, Yolo, and Santa Clara. You can also check the county Twitter and web pages for updates. Please check air quality warnings before going outside, and we will be encouraging UC to enact health and safety protections for wildfire smoke.

High temperatures have also led to rolling blackouts that could continue in the coming days, here are information and status reports from PG&E and Southern California Edison.

If you have been affected by the fires or blackouts and are in need of support or assistance (such as finding temporary housing, helping to coordinate financial assistance, or mitigating disruptions in research), or have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out by emailing uaw5810@uaw5810.org, or you can also fill out our mutual aid form, and one of the union stewards will be in touch.
