Later this year, as a union we will begin bargaining a new contract with the University of California administration, to replace our current collective bargaining agreement. This means that everything in our current contract will be up for re-negotiation — including wages, housing stipends, relocation support, childcare subsidies, parental leave, rights of international scholars, and more.

The initial demands are based on a majority membership survey, as well as membership discussion, surveys on COVID impacts and paid leave/childcare needs, and grievances over the past five years. These demands outline the general goals of issues we’ll be fighting to improve, and are not precise contract language. As the contract campaign progresses, the contract language will be developed through a combination of further research, additional membership discussion, topic-specific working groups, negotiating with UC administration, etc.
As we approach our first bargaining session later this summer, it is critical that every single member sign onto these demands. Your participation helps ensure that our collective bargaining agenda is representative of the needs of all UAW 5810 members. Further, your participation — alongside thousands of fellow members — sends a strong message to the UC administration that our voices must be heard. In the context of the COVID pandemic, negotiations are likely to be difficult this year, and our collective ability to make needed improvements will be a direct result of every member coming together to take unified action quickly.
The sooner every member participates, the stronger our collective position will be going into bargaining. Please take a minute to sign on today!
