I was wondering if I am eligible for Benefits if I obtain external funding. Does UC have to provide this funding if my fellowship does not provide any benefits? I heard from UC Davis that this is not the case.

All postdocs are eligible for the same benefits, and the premium contributions from the university vs from the postdoc are very clear in Article 3 of the contract (here). There isn’t any distinction between postdoc employees, fellows, or pay-directs. You get the same benefits at the same out-of-pocket cost. If you’re not getting the benefits, or if you’re getting charged more than you should (check your pay statement to be sure), contact someone from the union.
