This morning Congresswoman Jackie Speier delivered a letter to UC President Janet Napolitano supporting our demand for increased paid parental leave that meets or exceeds the NIH/NSF standard. To improve recruitment and retention, she urges UC to provide 12 weeks of paid parental leave to all faculty, staff, and postdocs.
Regarding parental leave for postdocs, Congresswoman Speier writes,
“Given our mutual commitment to women’s advancement, it is deeply troubling to me that postdoctoral scholars in the UC system still lack access to adequate paid parental leave…Driving postdocs who are new parents, who have invested decades in their educations, out of the field over a few months of accommodation is a waste of talent and investment. The solution is simple – postdoctoral scholars, both male and female, should have access to adequate paid parental leave.”
