Come join us on Thursday March 23 for a Postdoc meeting with pizza lunch. Given that it’s “tax season”, we’ll discuss the basics of filing Federal and State taxes, including issues affecting fellows and international scholars. Your peers are also an excellent resource for tax questions and this will be a good opportunity to ask questions and share information.
We will also be discussing our efforts on the topic of Visa and Immigration, and what kinds of support we can ask UC to provide for Postdocs affected by the visa ban. Come and share your ideas!
Lunch will be provided!
The 2nd Annual UCSC Postdoctoral research symposium will take place on Friday April 21st, 2017 at Stevenson event center, Stevenson College, UCSC from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our keynote speakers this year will be Prof. Joanne Engel, MD, PhD from UCSF and Prof. Katherine S. Pollard, PhD from Gladstone Institutes. In addition to our keynote lectures, this symposium will feature a series of 15 minute talks by postdocs, a poster session and a panel discussion. This year, the career panel discussion will be focusing on non-academic careers with experts from various biotech industries. The panel discussion will be followed by poster session and prizes for best talks and posters!
ALL are welcome to attend – the symposium is open to all UCSC members, faculty, Postdocs, graduate students and research scientists.
Postdocs: Please submit your abstracts for talks by Monday 10th April, so that we can schedule you in. All UCSC postdocs are welcome to participate.
Graduate students and Postdocs are welcome to submit an abstract for the poster session.
Abstract submission deadline: Monday 10th April. Registration and abstract submission link: https://goo.gl/forms/6pXsfmlUKg8yURVz1
At this month’s Campus Membership Meeting, we will be discussing Personal Time Off and the various kinds of leaves (Maternity, Parental, Personal, Medical, etc.) available to Postdocs, how to make use of those leaves when needed, as well as how paid sick days and holidays work under the contract.
At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss the UC Postdoc Health Benefits, and generally how health insurance works in the US. Especially helpful if you’re a relatively new UCX Postdoc, or you want to educate yourself on all options before the Open Enrollment period coming up in October/November.
We would like to invite you to our first membership meeting of 2018, on January 31 at 12pm. During this meeting, we’ll kick off the new year with a discussion about our union values and how those values help us protect our rights and win together. During 2017, we accomplished huge contract enforcement victories, we planned and participated in global actions like the March for Science, and we used our Researcher Values petition to have important conversations with elected officials across the state. At this meeting we’ll make plans for the rest of the year to ensure that we continue to build momentum. It looks like 2018 will be full of challenges, and we would love to hear your comments and ideas about the priorities for our union.
We would like to invite you to join us for a coffee hour co-hosted by the Postdoc Union and Academic Researchers United, a group of Project Scientists, Specialists, and Researchers who are organizing to form a union!
Coffee is on us; feel free to bring along your colleagues, especially fellow Postdocs and Academic Researchers.
This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.
In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.
We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.
This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!
