Access and affordability of housing is a concern for many, if not all of us. At this month’s membership meeting, we’ll explore the specific housing challenges UC Postdocs face, discuss what options exist at our campus, and talk about how the Postdoc Union can work to increase housing access.

Berkeley – Help Build Postdocs’s Public Voice @ Campbell Hall, Room 121

We are launching a program across the state to build our union’s political power, and each campus will guide efforts happening locally. The goal for our initial brainstorming meeting is to bring together ideas about how to take action here in the East Bay and leverage our collective voices to defend science and research, expand the rights of international researchers, and push for improvements on other issues of concern to researchers.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 21st at 11:30am in Campbell Hall, Room 121. RSVP here. This meeting is open to all researchers, so please invite your lab mates, colleagues, and friends to join us!

Berkeley Membership Meeting – Retirement Planning @ Campbell Hall Room 131

At this month’s campus membership meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to ask all of your questions about retirement plan options for Postdocs, including the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP). We’ll be joined by Nancy Pargot, a retirement planner from Fidelity Investments, who can provide expert advice. We will also update you on the status of our statewide grievance over UC’s proposal to increase Postdoc retirement plan fees. Hope to see you there!

Especially helpful if you’re a relatively new UC Berkeley Postdoc, or you want to educate yourself on all options before the Open Enrollment period coming up in October/November.

Visa & Green Card Workshop @ Evans Hall, Room 560

We are pleased to host another workshop on visa and immigration issues for Postdocs. Guest speaker will be Stacey Gartland from immigration law firm Van Der Hout, Brigagliano & Nightingale, LLP. Attorneys from this law firm have worked with the Postdoc Union for many years and are very familiar with the specific types of visa and immigration scenarios Postdocs face.

Topics covered will be work visa for scientists and researchers, the permanent residency application process, travel for international Postdocs, what changes might be coming from the new administration with regard to work visas for Postdocs, etc.
