Los Angeles Membership Meeting – The Value of Strong Membership @ Biomedical Sciences Research Building, Room 154
Jan 31 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

We would like to invite you to our first membership meeting of 2018. During this meeting, we’ll kick off the new year with a discussion about our union values and how those values help us protect our rights and win together. During 2017, we accomplished huge contract enforcement victories, we planned and participated in global actions like the March for Science, and we used our Researcher Values petition to have important conversations with elected officials across the state. At this meeting we’ll make plans for the rest of the year to ensure that we continue to build momentum. It looks like 2018 will be full of challenges, and we would love to hear your comments and ideas about the priorities for our union.

Davis Postdoc Union Social – Happy Hour @ Sophia's Thai Kitchen

The first month of the year is soon coming to an end. We hope that you had a great start of the new year and that you have a bright outlook on the rest of it. Please join us for our monthly Happy Hour and talk about what you look forward to for this year (or about anything else). We are also inviting academic researchers this time, who are in the process of forming a union, so please feel free to bring along any junior specialist, project scientist or similar.

San Diego – Working People’s Day of Action @ Convention Center Park
Feb 24 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.

In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.

We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.

Postdocs will be carpooling to the action after the Research BBQ. Please contact Manuel if you would like to join the carpool.

This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!

In Solidarity,

Anke Schennink, President, UC Davis
Neal Sweeney, Vice President, UC Santa Cruz
Carlena Ebben Eaton, Financial Secretary, UC Berkeley
Zach Reinert, Recording Secretary, UC Irvine
Matt Grimmer, Trustee, UC San Francisco
William Kelly, Trustee, UC Davis
Lydia Majure, Trustee, UC Berkeley
Aaron Sullivan, Guide, UC San Francisco
Charisse Winston, Sergeant At Arms, UC San Diego
