UCSF Parnassus Membership Meeting – The Value of Strong Membership @ Kalmanovitz Library, room CL-215
Jan 30 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

We would like to invite you to our first membership meeting of 2018, on January 30 at 12pm. During this meeting, we’ll kick off the new year with a discussion about our union values and how those values help us protect our rights and win together. During 2017, we accomplished huge contract enforcement victories, we planned and participated in global actions like the March for Science, and we used our Researcher Values petition to have important conversations with elected officials across the state. At this meeting we’ll make plans for the rest of the year to ensure that we continue to build momentum. It looks like 2018 will be full of challenges, and we would love to hear your comments and ideas about the priorities for our union.

Santa Cruz – Working People’s Day of Action @ Quarry Plaza
Feb 26 @ 12:00 pm

This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.

In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.

We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.

This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!

In Solidarity,

Anke Schennink, President, UC Davis
Neal Sweeney, Vice President, UC Santa Cruz
