This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.
In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.
We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.
This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!

Please join us for our monthly 1st Thursday Postdoc Union Happy Hour! Come enjoy casual conversation, networking, and get to know your Postdoc colleagues. All Postdocs are welcome, so invite your friends with the Facebook event!
Join for a coffee hour co-hosted by the Union of Postdocs and Academic Researchers United, a group of Project Scientists, Specialists, Researchers and others who are in the process for forming a union at UC! Come have coffee and socialize and feel free to bring along your colleagues, especially fellow Postdocs or Academic Researchers.
For this month’s membership meeting, we have invited Nancy Pargot, a retirement planner from Fidelity Investments, to present on the retirement plan options for Postdocs, including the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP), 403b and 457b plans.
You will have the opportunity to ask all of your questions about the plans, the various ways you can invest for the future, and what options you have when your UC employment ends.
