With our current Postdoc union contract set to expire in just over a year, it’s time to start thinking about our next round of bargaining with UC. At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss the basics of bargaining, including what it means to collectively bargain and how the process works. Then we’ll generate ideas for what issues we should prioritize and how Postdocs can most effectively exercise our collective power to win a great contract in 2020!

Now that we’ve pushed UC to drop its objections to our union, bargaining will begin soon! With that exciting news in mind, we invite you to join for a meeting to give us your feedback and learn about the bargaining process and how you can be involved – including helping to develop specific proposals, outreach to other ARs, political action, communicating personal stories, and much more.

Bargaining officially begins on May 14 at UCLA for the first-ever contract for Academic Researchers! At this month’s meeting we’ll discuss AR experiences with promotion, what works and doesn’t work about current procedures, and brainstorm ways that we can negotiate a more fair and transparent process. Anyone who is interested in this topic should please come and share your ideas!!

At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss best practices for applications. And your colleagues are often the best resource for demystifying the process so we’ll also hear from Postdocs about their experiences with fellowship applications.

What rights does our contract provide with regard to appointment length and appointment letters? What does a layoff mean? What if you find another job before your appointment end date? Join us at our next meeting to learn more about everything appointment-related, and hear from other Postdocs about their experiences.
