In our last campus membership meeting before bargaining begins, we will discuss how we can negotiate for benefits and policies that make UC a more inclusive workplace for all postdocs.

The discussion will focus on our goals of winning improved family-friendly policies including paid parental leave and childcare support, and enhanced protections against all forms of discrimination and harassment.

We will also recap our Week of Action against sexual harassment at the Berkeley campus last month, and discuss what similar types of activities we can organize at other campuses.

Come celebrate the start of bargaining our new contract where we will negotiate for fair compensation, improved job security, and inclusivity and gender equity in the workplace, with some good eating, fun, and relaxation on campus at Humanities Gateway 1030.

Partners, children, and friends are most welcome. We will provide food and drinks (no alcohol allowed in the park) but you are welcome to bring additional items.

At our last Joint Council meeting, representatives from every campus agreed to begin a strike authorization vote. Please join us for a town hall meeting next week to learn about and discuss this very important vote.

As we have shared in the bargaining updates, the university administration appears intent on delaying the bargaining process and engaging in unproductive meetings. We have continuously showed up prepared and ready to voice your concerns and present language that moves us all forward. Our strength at the table has been reinforced by your actions on the campuses. Together we have demonstrated to UC management that we as postdocs are united and willing to stand up for our rights. Now we must show the university, that if necessary, we are prepared to take action in the face of a failure to negotiate in good faith and violations of our rights under California law.

Your union’s Executive Board and Joint Council have voted to hold a strike authorization vote among its members. A strike authorization vote empowers the bargaining team to call for a strike if circumstances justify–such as if UC does not bargain in good faith, fails to provide the union information necessary and relevant for bargaining, or takes actions to undermine the union’s or its members rights under State of California’s labor laws. Showing you stand behind your bargaining team, and that it has the authority to act in the face of bad faith bargaining will send a powerful message to the university.

Before the vote is held there will be meetings at every campus where we will share the latest news from the bargaining table and discuss the upcoming vote and answer any questions you may have. We urge you attend.

Irvine Contract Celebration Happy Hour @ Pita Jungle

Thanks to months of incredible effort and persistence across the state, we won a contract that will hugely improve conditions for Postdocs at UC. Now it’s time to celebrate!

On Friday, November 4 at 5 PM, join us for a contract celebration Happy Hour at Pita Jungle.

Partners, and friends are most welcome. We will cover the cost of drinks and light apps until 6 PM.

This month we will discuss the new contract which is in effect now through September 30, 2020. Come learn about all the new provisions and get answers to your questions on topics such as:

  • When should I get my guaranteed pay increase and how much will it be?
  • How does the new parental leave work?
  • How long should my new appointment be?
  • What are my rights under the improved Non-Discrimination article?
  • And any other questions you may have…

We will also be voting for a representative to the elections committee. The elections committee consists of one elected representative from every campus. We will accept nominations at the meeting and hold an election if necessary.

And finally, we will be brainstorming and discussing plans for political action in response to this month’s election.

Irvine Membership Meeting – Resolving Workplace Problems @ Natural Sciences II, Room 4206

At this month’s Campus Membership Meeting, we will be discussing the grievance process for resolving work-related concerns, problems and/or issues, including your rights under our contract.

Our new contract represents a huge step forward for UC Postdocs, but it’s absolutely essential that we do everything in our power to insure those rights are being observed. One example is making sure all Postdocs are receiving the correct salary under our new contract. The grievance process is an essential component of contract enforcement. We hope you will join us for this important conversation.

Irvine Monthly Membership Meeting – Taxes for Postdocs @ Natural Sciences II, Room 4206

At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss the basics of filing Federal and State taxes, including issues affecting fellows and international scholars. Your peers are also an excellent resource for tax questions and this will be a good opportunity to ask questions and share information.

We will also be discussing what kinds of support we can ask UC to provide for Postdocs affected by the visa ban. Come and share your ideas!
