We would like to invite you to our first membership meeting of 2018, on January 31 at 12pm. During this meeting, we’ll kick off the new year with a discussion about our union values and how those values help us protect our rights and win together. During 2017, we accomplished huge contract enforcement victories, we planned and participated in global actions like the March for Science, and we used our Researcher Values petition to have important conversations with elected officials across the state. At this meeting we’ll make plans for the rest of the year to ensure that we continue to build momentum. It looks like 2018 will be full of challenges, and we would love to hear your comments and ideas about the priorities for our union.
Happy New Year! 2018 will be an important year for our Union as we build on the progress we’ve made to protect our rights as researchers and look forward to upcoming elections. To kick off 2018 and discuss all of the ways to get more involved with our Union, we are having a party on February 1st! This will be an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about our stewards network, meet fellow supportive Postdocs and Union leaders from UCB and LBL, and begin to plan what we will accomplish together in 2018.
We are also launching working groups to take on specific issues of interest to Postdocs, and you can learn more about the working groups and sign up here. Proposed working groups include Political Action, International Researchers, and Equity & Diversity. Sign up, and then join us on February 1st to meet your fellow working group members and start making plans!
We will provide alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and RSVPs are strongly encouraged to ensure that we have enough drinks! We will also have a potluck, so please plan to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. The union office is a short walk from campus, close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss the basics of filing Federal and State taxes, including issues affecting fellows and international scholars. Your peers are also an excellent resource for tax questions and this will be a good opportunity to ask questions and share information.
Lunch will be provided!
We would like to invite you to join us for a coffee hour co-hosted by the Postdoc Union and Academic Researchers United, a group of Project Scientists, Specialists, and Researchers who are organizing to form a union!
Coffee is on us; feel free to bring along your colleagues, especially fellow Postdocs and Academic Researchers.
This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.
In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.
We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.
This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!

We will have an informational session about filing US tax forms. We invited two Tax Professionals from H&R Block who will cover basic taxes info and answer questions you might have.
Please RSVP here so we can get a count for the lunch order. Via the RSVP form, you can also submit questions related to taxes that we will send to the tax professionals ahead of the meeting.
At this meeting, we will also be voting for a representative to the elections committee. The UAW local 5810 elections committee consists of one elected representative from every campus. We will accept nominations at the meeting and hold an election if necessary.
Food will be provided!
We will host a coffee hour next Friday at 2PM. Drop by to have a cup of coffee and mingle with fellow Postdocs!
This coffee hour will serve as a special membership meeting where we will be voting for an LBL representative to the elections committee. The elections committee consists of one elected representative from every campus. We will accept nominations at the meeting and hold an election, if necessary.
There will also be materials at the coffee hour for making signs for the March for Science next Saturday.
The UCSC STEM Postdoc Association, Academic Researchers United and the Postdoc Union would like to invite you to our Spring social! Come out for a happy hour drink (first beverage is on us!), play a game of pool, and meet new colleagues.
Feel free to let us know you’ll be there on the Facebook event page. You can also indicate there if you would need a ride from campus, or ask any question you may have. Or email us at email@example.com.
