At this month’s membership meeting we’ll discuss how we can help build the upcoming March for Science in Sacramento on April 22. The March for Science is a national movement that is organizing actions and marches across the country on April 22 in support of science and scientists. Postdocs across the state have been getting involved, and we will discuss what we can do for our local march.

We will also talk about your rights to take political action, including your rights to attend marches and protests (including if you’re on a visa).

Additionally we’ll be electing campus stewards. All members in good standing are eligible to accept nomination.

Lunch will be provided!

Santa Cruz Membership Meeting – Taxes for Postdocs @ Sinsheimer Labs, Room 301

Come join us on Thursday March 23 for a Postdoc meeting with pizza lunch. Given that it’s “tax season”, we’ll discuss the basics of filing Federal and State taxes, including issues affecting fellows and international scholars. Your peers are also an excellent resource for tax questions and this will be a good opportunity to ask questions and share information.

We will also be discussing our efforts on the topic of Visa and Immigration, and what kinds of support we can ask UC to provide for Postdocs affected by the visa ban. Come and share your ideas!

The Postdoc union — along with the UAW 2865, UC-AFT, and CAIR-Sacramento Valley — will be hosting a workshop with Christine Brigagliano of the immigration law firm Van Der Hout, Brigagliano & Nightingale, LLP. Christine has worked with us for years and is an expert in the specific types of visa and immigration scenarios Postdocs and their families face. She will share some important information and answer questions from international Postdocs and their families.

Come join fellow UC researchers and students as we get ready for the Sacramento March for Science. On Thursday, April 20th at 4 pm we will be hosting a panel discussion between researchers, faculty and students to explore the issues that impact academic science and what we can do to defend and advance the cause of science and fact based policy. After the panel discussion we’ll be making signs to bring to the Sacramento March for Science on April 22nd. We’ll have food and plenty of sign making materials.

Santa Cruz – Postdoc Symposium @ Stevenson Event Center

The 2nd Annual UCSC Postdoctoral research symposium will take place on Friday April 21st, 2017 at Stevenson event center, Stevenson College, UCSC from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our keynote speakers this year will be Prof. Joanne Engel, MD, PhD from UCSF and Prof. Katherine S. Pollard, PhD from Gladstone Institutes. In addition to our keynote lectures, this symposium will feature a series of 15 minute talks by postdocs, a poster session and a panel discussion. This year, the career panel discussion will be focusing on non-academic careers with experts from various biotech industries. The panel discussion will be followed by poster session and prizes for best talks and posters!

ALL are welcome to attend – the symposium is open to all UCSC members, faculty, Postdocs, graduate students and research scientists.

Postdocs: Please submit your abstracts for talks by Monday 10th April, so that we can schedule you in. All UCSC postdocs are welcome to participate.

Graduate students and Postdocs are welcome to submit an abstract for the poster session.

The April 22nd March for Science marks a historic day of action for researchers at UC, and across the country. At our meeting this month, we will be talking about how we can maintain the momentum from the March, build solidarity within the scientific community, and engage the public to help push back against anti-science policies.
