The April 22nd March for Science marked a historic day of action for researchers at UC, and across the country. At our meeting this month, we will be talking about how we can maintain the momentum from the March, build solidarity within the scientific community, and engage the public to help push back against anti-science policies. Bring your creative ideas!
Additionally we’ll be electing campus stewards. All members in good standing are eligible to accept nomination.
Lunch will be provided!
At this month’s Campus Membership Meeting, we will be discussing Personal Time Off and the various kinds of leaves (Maternity, Parental, Personal, Medical, etc.) available to Postdocs, how to make use of those leaves when needed, as well as how paid sick days and holidays work under the contract.
At this month’s Campus Membership Meeting we will discuss career development resources: how to take advantage of them, rights under our contract and how these rights can be improved upon. Come join us!
At this month’s membership meeting we’ll answer frequently asked questions about retirement plan options for Postdocs, including the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP). We’ll be joined by a retirement planner from Fidelity Investments who can provide expert advice.
This Saturday, February 24, is the Working People’s Day of Action. Thousands of people will take to the streets across the country to protest economic inequality and demand the right to have a say in their working conditions.
In California, there are events across the state, starting on Saturday and extending into next Monday, when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. The case in question would limit the ability of public sector unions (including our union) to collect financial resources that are used to ensure rights and benefits for workers. This case is funded by corporate billionaires and is an attempt to limit the power of unions, which have historically been a driving force in fighting income inequality and institutionalized racism and sexism. Unions are also responsible for many of the benefits all American workers enjoy.
We encourage you to participate in any of the actions in your area, and if you are interested in continuing to fight back against this and other attacks against working people, join our Union! We are stronger together, and your voice, power, and expertise could help us secure even more rights and benefits for Postdocs.
This is a great day to sport our Postdoc Union shirts! Let us know if you’re coming, but don’t have a Postdoc Union shirt yet!
