Join us for our April Membership meeting next week. We’ll talk about academic unions in the US, including some exciting updates from Postdocs and Researchers across the country who are currently organizing their union!
This is also an excellent opportunity to ask your questions about the Union or any workplace issues in person.
For this month’s membership meeting, we have invited Nancy Pargot, a retirement planner from Fidelity Investments, to present on the retirement plan options for Postdocs, including the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP), 403b and 457b plans.
You will have the opportunity to ask all of your questions about the plans, the various ways you can invest for the future, and what options you have when your UC employment ends.
Future of Research promotes grassroots advocacy by researchers and collects data about academia and scientific training. In Gary’s talk, titled “What’s Next, for the Next Generation of Researchers?”, he will present results from the Next Generation Researchers Initiative, a Congressionally-mandated committee convened by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine to examine how to create viable and sustainable career paths for early-career scientists. Postdocs and Academic Researchers from UC Berkeley and LBL will also speak about how they are taking collective action to make improvements.
Don’t miss this great opportunity for a conversation with Postdocs and Academic Researchers on many of the issues we’re facing regarding funding, research, and our careers. The event is open to all, so please help spread the word. There will be more information in weeks to come (including details on live streaming), but for now, save the date!
Our union will host another coffee hour tomorrow at 2 PM. Drop by to have a cup of coffee, connect with fellow researchers, get answers to any questions you may have about rights and benefits, and discuss ways that we can build our membership!
Hope to see you there!
Are you interested in gaining teaching experience as a Postdoc? In this month’s membership meeting, we will discuss opportunities for Postdocs to hone our teaching skills as part of career development. We’ll talk about different kinds of teaching, whether formal or informal, and how to build those experiences into your CV. And we’ll also discuss opportunities for teaching in the area, both within UC and outside.
Lunch will be provided!
Access and affordability of housing is a concern for many, if not all of us. Please join us at this month’s membership meeting discussing the specific housing challenges UC Postdocs face, how the Postdoc Union can work to increase housing access, and all options that exist at our campus. We will also report back on the responses we got from the UCSF Campus Housing Survey.
Lunch will be provided!
Join us for on July 19th for our July Postdoc Happy Hour! Stop by to have a drink and some finger food, socialize, and meet new Postdocs from UC Berkeley and LBL.
Bring your colleagues who want to learn more or get involved with our union!
Join fellow postdocs and academic researchers for our annual Postdoc Union Potluck Picnic, cohosted with Academic Researchers United. You and your family are all invited! Please bring something to share if you are able. Feel free to bring your labmates and friends!
Please email if you have any questions and if you’d like to help out. (Also, a small cash donation for alcoholic beverages is appreciated.)
