UAW 5810, the Union of Postdocs, is unequivocal in our conviction that racism, sexism, xenophobia, anti-LGBTQ biogtry, and other forms of discrimination must be met with unified, public, and forceful denunciation. We are appalled by long-standing racial injustices in our communities and by the recent escalation of white nationalism across the United States, most recently in Charlottesville this weekend. The heinous murder of Heather Heyer, an anti-racist protester, is yet another example of how the Trump administration’s words and actions have energized fascist, Neo-Nazi groups that terrorize our communities and threaten social justice, and are increasingly making our universities the front lines for their hate. This cannot stand unopposed.

We are committed to doing everything in our power to defeat this scourge through mass mobilization and direct action. To that end, our union is joining a wide array of social justice groups and labor unions in endorsing the Bay Area Rally Against Hate on August 27 in Berkeley. Similar events will take place throughout the state. It is incumbent upon all of us, as a culturally diverse union of academic workers, to actively reject injustice and demonstrate steadfast unity against hate and white supremacy!
