WIN: we stopped UC visa service fees!
We’re happy to share with you a significant win for international Postdocs on visas! As part of a settlement agreement with our union, UC has agreed to stop charging Postdocs for visa service fees on all campuses. In the past, some departments forced Postdocs to pay as much as $500 to cover its costs for processing a visa application or renewal. To be clear, this is the UC internal visa service fee, not the J-1 SEVIS fee or the visa application fee collected by the US government.

Please let us know if you were recently asked to pay a UC service fee, or if you have any questions!

Having a union means more rights and protections for international researchers
Through our union, we won important new rights in our contract that benefit international Postdocs (see graphic), and we have also:

By joining together, we help create a stronger, more equitable, and more inclusive higher education system. As always, if you or a colleague needs advice or support regarding your visa or any threat to your visa, please contact us at

Strong membership is key to our union’s efforts
There is a direct relationship between how many Postdocs are union members and our ability to improve our rights and working conditions. So if you support these efforts, please do your part by becoming a member using this online form.
