In 2023, UC violated our union contract by unilaterally changing the mental health benefits in the Health Net PPO plan — out-of-network coverage for mental health benefits increased from a $0 deductible and 0% co-pay to a $200 deductible and a 40% co-pay. After Postdocs filed a union grievance, UC has agreed to reimburse costs for 2023 and to restore the plan for 2024 to $0 deductible and 0% co-pay.

This is a victory for academic workers and another demonstration that organizing gets results. Postdocs who have been improperly charged for mental health services can now follow the below steps to get reimbursed for 2023 costs incurred for these services for in-person care:

1. Complete this reimbursement form and HIPAA form. Spouses/partners and children over 18 should fill out their own forms.

2. Email both completed forms to Gallagher (UC’s health benefits administrator) at UniversityServices.GBS.psbp@ajg.com by February 29, 2024, with all relevant documentation attached— such as Explanation of Benefits forms, receipts for copays, and anything else that demonstrates that you received the services you did.

3. Look for an email within 30 days of submitting your forms. Gallagher staff should let you know if they need further information to disburse your reimbursement.

4. Look for a check in the mail, directly from Health Net, within 60 days of April 1, 2024. If the check is late, or if it doesn’t cover the proper amount, get in touch with a union steward or email uaw5810@uaw5810.org.
