Friday 8/21 at 12PM: Visa/Immigration Updates and Strategy Session
Together with International Student/Scholar working groups at other UAW academic unions, we are hosting another online session for international scholars. Panelists will include immigration attorney Stacey Garland from Van Der Hout LLP, Rich Stolz from One America (an immigrant rights group), and international students and scholars who are leaders in UAW academic unions. Topics will include current immigration laws and University policies, and how to stay informed and involved in the upcoming academic year.
Please RSVP and submit questions for the panelists here.
Incoming international scholars are especially encouraged to attend! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Please share this email and the Facebook event with your networks.
Update on H-1B restrictions: Exceptions to June 22nd Executive Order expanded
Last week, the State Department issued new guidance that expands the “national interest exceptions” to the June 22nd Executive Order. This is especially important for Postdocs and Academic Researchers who are on H-1B visas and are currently outside of the US. Under these new rules, additional medical researchers, as well as people who continue previous employment, may qualify for national interest exceptions and may be able to enter the country. This new guidance is a sign that all our organizing is working! Since the executive order was announced academic worker unions have sprung into action and immigrant rights organizations have also filed multiple lawsuits. We need to keep pushing until all the anti-immigrant orders are reversed!
International Scholar Community Slack
Several UAW 5810 International Scholars Working Group members have started a Slack workspace for all International Scholars in the US to foster an online community to exchange the most up-to-date info on executive orders, visas, etc., to provide moral support and peer-advice to each other, and discuss advocacy actions. It’s open to all international scholars, at UC or elsewhere. You can join via this link (and feel free to share with your network).
If you would like to join UAW 5810’s International Scholars Working Group, or would like more info, please reach out via internationalscholars@uaw5810.org.
