During our 2016 contract campaign, Postdocs won strict and enforceable timelines to resolve harassment and discrimination claims through the union grievance procedure, rather than waiting for the Title IX process to play out. And during our current negotiations, we have proposed improvements upon those gains including anti-bullying protections and peer-led anti-harassment trainings that have been proven to change workplace cultures

In yesterday’s bargaining session, we were shocked that UC’s first proposal on Nondiscrimination included major steps backward on sexual harassment and discrimination. Instead of working with us to further address this crisis in academia, UC is attempting to roll back the gains Postdocs have already made. UC’s proposal would effectively eliminate timelines for addressing cases of harassment and discrimination and would allow UC to make unilateral changes to how harassment and discrimination are defined. This is unacceptable. Winning workplace equity is one of our top bargaining goals — and a major part of this is ensuring that all of us can work free from harassment and discrimination. 

We also made a proposal on Union Access and Rights and are moving closer to reaching agreement on that topic. Check out these and all the Postdoc and UC proposals in this tracker. Finally, we agreed to a contract extension to 1/14/21 and are working on finalizing bargaining dates in December and January.

Two weeks ago, Postdocs and Student Researchers sent UC decisive messages. Over 4,000 Postdocs voted to authorize a strike if circumstances justify. And over 10,500 SRs voted to authorize a strike if UC does not agree to recognize and begin bargaining with SRU-UAW. 

In preparation for potential strike activities, Postdocs and Student Researchers across the state are signing up as strike captains for their lab, cohort, and/or department. Please RSVP to the training and sign up to be a strike captain!
