While Academic Researchers, Postdocs, TAs, Tutors, Readers and Student Researchers are all fighting at the bargaining table to make UC a more fair and equitable workplace, UAW members are also fighting to fix the broken higher education system by canceling student debt. Will you please click here to sign the AFL-CIO’s petition urging President Biden to cancel student debt?Yesterday, UAW President Ray Curry joined with AFL-CIO President Liz Schuler, Congressmember Ayanna Presley, and others to urge President Biden to cancel student debt. Student debt is one of the most important racial justice/social justice issues of our time because it disproportionately impacts people of color, affecting Black women the most. Canceling more than $50,000 in student debt would benefit those most affected and improve the lives of all workers, reducing racial disparities and improving the economy.
“Educational debt, when compounded by interest, becomes a millstone that compels recent graduates to prioritize the needs of financial institutions over those of their families. This is simply unacceptable and must change.” – UAW President Ray Curry.
That is why, along with millions of other union members across the country, Academic Workers are demanding that President Biden a minimum of $50,000 of student debt per borrower.. Will you send a clear message to President Biden by signing the AFL-CIO’s petition urging him to cancel student debt. We are also collecting stories from union members about how you are affected by Student Debt. If you have student debt, sharing your story of how this has impacted you will help build the movement to cancel debt. Please fill out this form to share your story.
