Update on Compensation/Benefits proposals

  • At last week’s session, we made a new proposal on Compensation that included significantly raising the minimum starting salary to $70,000 in line with National Academy of Sciences recommendations on Postdoc pay, as well as annual 8% scale increases to keep pace with the cost of living and 4% annual experience-based increases.
  • UC is sending emails to Postdocs stating that under its last compensation proposal passed on 6/23, “all bargaining unit members would receive an average 4% increase over the 5/1/22 pay scale.” Based on our analysis of UC’s proposal, 37.64% of PDs would not receive a raise in October, and these Postdocs would have to wait nearly 2 years on average for any raise whatsoever. UC: stop lying to us!
  • Benefits: We made a proposal on health benefits that would reduce benefit costs for Postdocs and add new benefits including infertility coverage, acupuncture and improved vision coverage.
  • The excitement ended with our proposals, as UC once again did not prepare any proposals to pass back. The most recent proposals and all others can be found on this tracker.

How you can help Postdocs win!
There are tons of ways to get involved. The most simple and important step you can take is to sign up to be a dues-paying member of your union. Our leverage at the bargaining table is directly correlated to the percentage of Postdocs who are dues-paying members. If you are not currently signed-up, or are not sure, please click here to join!

Additionally, it’s important to get involved — some ways include keeping other members of your lab informed about bargaining, providing a quote about why bargaining is important to you, and helping sign up your Postdoc colleagues as members. And all members are able to join our weekly bargaining sessions with UC. The next session is Thursday, July 21 from 1-3pm (our caucus will start at 12:30). You can click here to RSVP for bargaining.
